Italian legend Del Piero ended his 19-year stay with Juventus to move to Australia last summer, and is keen to extend his stay with Sydney when his current deal with the A-League club expires at the end of next month.
'If I stay next year, I'll be happy. I'm very happy to be here,'' said Del Piero. ''At the moment, we are discussing for the next year. When you discuss about the next year, for sure, the answer is yes. But for sure we have to fix a couple of things first.''
Del Piero has netted 11 times in 18 games for Sydney, justifying a contract that apparently earns him around (AUD) $2 million (£1.35 million) a season as the league's biggest star.
Sydney chief executive Tony Pignata said: "We're still in negotiations with Alessandro's management and we're looking forward to an outcome shortly.
"It's not been signed off, and I can't make any further comment on the matter. I'll say that we are hopeful and confident, as we have always been.''
Reports claim Del Piero will pen the new deal on Thursday.
