England's Luke Shaw hurdles a Costa Rica challenge

England’s disappointing World Cup ended with a goalless draw in Belo Horizonte as Costa Rica advanced as group winners.

But Roy Hodgson’s much changed side showed some promise and created enough chances to beat a lacklustre Costa Rica side comfortably in Belo Horizonte.

There were many impressive performances in white shirts on the day and had Daniel Sturridge brought his shooting boots with him, he may well have had a hat-trick.

The Liverpool striker had chances to put England ahead in the first half and also had viable claims for a penalty turned down as Oscar Duarte stretched out a leg as he was about to pull the trigger.

He then spurned a glorious opportunity to win it when played in on goal by Jack Wilshere but slid his shot agonisingly wide.

Costa Rica’s chances were limited, their best a long range drive from Celso Borges that Ben Foster did excellently to tip onto the bar.

The draw means that Costa Rica advance as group winners after Uruguay beat Italy 1-0 in the other group match.

KEY MOMENTS

PRE-MATCH: England make nine changes to the team that lost to Uruguay. But is naming Frank Lampard and James Milner in the side really a step forward or a sentimental pick? Frank Lampard (36) becomes the second oldest player to captain England at the World Cup after only Peter Shilton (40).

2’ – COSTA RICA CLOSE: Campbell’s shot deflects off Cahill’s back and loops past a statuesque Foster and just wide of the goal.

12’ – STURRIDGE CLOSE: Wilshere finds the England striker and he flashes a shot just wide of Navas’ post.

17’ – STURRIDGE SHOT: He sees Navas slightly off his line and tries an audacious volley that goes wide. Nice idea.

23’ – GREAT SAVE FOSTER: It’s a fingertip save over the bar from Borges’ dipping free kick.

27’ – ENGLAND PENALTY SHOUT: Barkley knocks down Milner’s cross into the path of Sturridge. He’s about to pull the trigger when Duarte stretches a leg out to stop him.

34’ – CHANCE STURRIDGE: Jones flicks on Barkley’s corner and Sturridge nods over from close range.

64’ - CHANCE STURRIDGE: He plays a neat 1-2 with Wilshere on the edge of the box and should score but slips it wide of the far post.

80’ – ROONEY GOES CLOSE: He tries a chip from the edge of the box and Navas is forced to touch it over.

KEY STATS

England failed to register a shot on target in this match until the 80th minute (via Wayne Rooney).

This is the first time Costa Rica have failed to net against a European side at the World Cup (in eight matches).

England have now had 11 goalless draws in World Cup history, more than any other side.

Roy Hodgson has now gone five games without a World Cup win (two with Switzerland and three with England)

Frank Lampard has now had 40 shots at World Cups without ever being credited with a goal.

This was the 14th time Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard appeared in a tournament game together.

Their first tournament appearance together came 10 years and 11 days ago (at Euro 2004).

There have been just five goals in England’s last eight World Cup games.

One point is England’s lowest ever points haul at a World Cup group stage.

TALKING POINT

What now for the future? Frank Lampard was a controversial selection to start as captain and surely Steven Gerrard has also played his last England game. Both were workmanlike if ineffective and outshone on the day by Wilshere, Barkley and Lallana whilst Luke Shaw had an excellent game at left back.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Luke Shaw (England): Exciting going forward and very quick to get back and defend. Excellent in both defence and attack.
