De Gea, 23, was an unused substitute as the Netherlands inflicted a heavy 5-1 defeat on Spain in Group B on Friday – a result which prompted some calls for the Manchester United keeper to replace Iker Casillas in goal.

He made his debut for the world and European champions against El Salvador in Spain's final warm-up friendly before the World Cup.

It now means Spain manager Vicente del Bosque must decide whether to keep faith with Casillas or drop him for Liverpool’s Pepe Reina.

Spain will attempt to get their campaign back on track with victory over Chile on Wednesday, before facing Australia in their final group game.
