Wimbledon - Liam Broady’s father decided not to watch his Wimbledon triumph

The world number 182 fought back valiantly from two sets down to beat Australia’s Marinko Matosevic 5-7 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-3 in what was a very memorable victory against the odds.

But his estranged father, Simon, did not wish to see his son perform, despite being at Wimbledon.

The 21-year-old and his dad have not spoken in three years and, even though his sister Naomi cheered him on at SW19, Simon chose not to watch Liam’s match before seeing his daughter in action.

“My dad’s not even popped into my head with the result. We’re not in touch,” Broady said after his win.

"But it was fantastic to have the rest of my family watching.

“That’s what makes it more special, is being able to share such a moment that I’ll remember for the rest of my life with so many people that I love.”

The British number six reportedly fell out with his dad, who still coaches his sister Naomi, because he turned to the LTA for financial backing and coaching to aid his career.

His dad is staunchly anti-LTA after he broke away from the organisation when Naomi was suspended over a photo on social media which saw her posing by a condom machine back in 2007 while aged 17.

Sadly, Broady does not foresee that his victory will help bring about an end to the family rift which has kept him and his father apart for the last three years.

“I doubt it, but we’ll see,” he said when asked about a potential reconciliation, adding that he still stands by his decision to rejoin the LTA for support.

“It was always the right decision for me whether I got the results or not,” he said.

“I had to kind of grow up and mature as a person, not just as a tennis player, by sort of doing things on my own - even things like filing your tax, getting your own racquets strung, booking your own flights.

“It’s all stuff you need to learn and grow up and realise that you’re not living in an enclosed world anymore. I’ll always say I think it was the right decision.”

Naomi was unable to follow her brother in recovering to win her first-round match and crashed out in the first round in straight sets against Mariana Duque of Colombia – but her father reflected upon a gutsy display nonetheless.

“Liam did a great job and Naomi fell a bit short. Her opponent was very good, especially in the second set. But I’m proud of them both, obviously.”

Asked if he intended to make up with Liam, he added, “I’m not going to comment on that.”

“I’ll be here,” was his response when also asked if he would be present at his son’s second-round match against Belgium's David Goffin.
