Tennis - McEnroe wins Royal Albert Hall opener

John McEnroe beat Wayne Ferreira 7-6 6-2 in the American's opening Statoil Masters match at the Royal Albert Hall.

The former world number one was too strong for the South African in the second set after needing a tie-break to take the first.

McEnroe remains on course to retain the title he won last year at the impressive venue in west London.

Seven-times Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander, tennis legends Henri Leconte, Sergi BrugueraPat Rafter and Greg Rusedski are also in action at the competition.

Later in the evening, McEnroe joined former England footballer Jamie Redknapp, former England cricket captain Andrew Flintoff and comedian Jack Whitehall in a celebrity exhibition match.
