Tennis - Evans crashes out in Marseille opener, Edmund follows

Britain's Dan Evans was knocked out of the ATP Marseille Open by Ukraine's Sergiy Stakhovsky.

Evans, who marked a major milestone in his career by making the semi-finals of ATP Zagreb last week, got off to a perfect start against the world number 91 as he took the opening set, but went on to lose 3-6 7-6(4) 6-4.

The British number two saved five break points as he claimed the opening set, and a further eight as the second set went to a tie-break - though he missed six break point opportunities of his own before losing that tie-breaker.

The final set was just as tightly fought, with Stakhovsky breaking early on and Evans breaking back, only for the Ukrainian to break once more to claim victory and earn a spot in the last 16.

There was more disappointment for Britain when world number 322 Kyle Edmund was also beaten 7-5 6-1 by Tobias Kamke.

World top 10 stars Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga are both playing the event in front of their home fans, with Gasquet to start his tournament in the last-16 against Blaz Kavcic.
