O'Sullivan - bidding for a sixth title to go with his successes in 2001, 2004, 2008, 2012 and 2013 at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre - was probably fortunate not to trail 10-6 after Perry sqaundered a couple of obvious chances to claim the 16th frame.

O'Sullivan was 5-3 behind at the start of the afternoon's play, but could not quite reel Perry in despite closing to 5-4 and 7-6 adrfit in a high quality and tense best-of-25 frame encounter.

O'Sullivan won the ninth frame with a 93 only for his opponent to collect four of the next six frames.

Perry had led 5-3 overnight heading into Friday, but O'Sullivan took the first frame of the second session by recording a break of 93, the highest of the day.

Perry won four out of the next six frames to lead 9-6 which included a run of 88 in frame 14.

He may yet live to regret failing to see out the 16th frame with O'Sullivan clearing from yellow to pink to split the second session 4-4.

They play to a finish from 10am on Saturday morning with the first man to 13 frames progressing to the quarter-finals.

Former Masters champion Mark Selby booked his place in the last eight courtesy of a 13-9 win over 2008 and 2012 finalist Ali Carter.

Elsewhere, Alan McManus constructed a 4-3 lead over fellow veteran campaigner Ken Doherty - the 1997 world champion - before play had to be halted a frame early to allow the evening session to begin. They contiinue their duel on Saturday morning.
