Morgan Schneiderlin scored twice as Southampton inflicted consecutive home defeats on West Ham with a 3-1 victory in the Premier League.

Mark Noble’s deflected opener and Schneiderlin’s curled equaliser were rare highlights in an underwhelming opening period as both sides struggled to mount meaningful attacks.

But the visitors improved vastly after the restart and edged ahead when Schneiderlin profited from some lazy home defending before Graziano Pelle grabbed his first goal in Saints colours late on.

Schneiderlin, who has reportedly been disillusioned at Saints amid interest from Tottenham, was excellent throughout as Southampton rose into the top half of the table with their first league win of the season.

The hosts paraded loan signing Alex Song prior to kick-off and will hope his arrival will help unify a midfield that struggled to get near their opposition in the second-half.

KEY MOMENTS

21’ – SO CLOSE! Downing's free-kick cannons into the wall, spirals into the penalty area and straight to the feet of Ricardo Vaz Te. Goal time? No goal time. Forster makes a superb instinctive stop with his leg.

27’ – GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Southampton. Noble takes a speculative effort from distance, it spins off Maya Yoshida and bounces past Fraser Forster. The hosts lead out of nothing!

31’ – OFF THE LINE! Pelle leaps like a salmon inside the penalty area, sends a header at goal and watches forlornly as Cresswell adjusts to hack it off the line.

45’ – EQUALISER! West Ham 1-1 Southampton. Schneiderlin, after seeing his initial effort blocked, curls an effort just inside the post. But did Pelle glance that in with his head? That's one for the replay experts.

53’ – DOUBLE CHANCE! Ward-Prowse unselfishly clips the ball towards Tadic, who pokes a volley towards goal. Turned behind by Adrian. The resulting corner flies through to Schneiderlin... Scooped over!

58’ - MAJOR CONTROVERSY! The flag denies Pelle after the non-Brazilian striker had tucked home Ward-Prowse's free-kick. Just seen a replay. He's level. Disastrous officiating.

67’ – GOAL! West Ham 1-2 Southampton. The visitors take the set-piece short and the Saints have a 2v0 situation in the corner. Into the area... And in! Schneiderlin again. Hopeless defending.

83’ – GOAL! West Ham 1-3 Southampton. Pelle lashes into the roof of the net, capping a wonderful free-flowing move by the visitors.

TALKING POINT

How have Southampton pulled off a decent start to the season? The Saints seemingly orchestrated their own downfall this summer – permitting sale after sale when stability seemed necessary – and now have a side comprising unproven quality, limited cohesion and a new manager. And yet, it works. Now go and spend that transfer war chest, Ronald.
