Eric Dier celebrates scoring the winning goal for Tottenham against West Ham

Debutant Eric Dier struck in injury time to snatch a dramatic 1-0 victory for Tottenham against West Ham as both sides finished with 10 men following an engaging opening day clash at Upton Park.

Dier showed great composure to evade the hosts’ offside trap, round Adrian and slot into the unguarded goal as he secured his new side victory in the first London derby of the season.

A tepid first-half was enlivened on the half-hour mark when Chris Foy awarded a penalty to the hosts and dismissed Kyle Naughton after adjudging the defender had illegally used his arms to block Kevin Nolan’s fierce close-range effort.

But, despite sending Hugo Lloris the wrong way, Mark Noble dragged his spot-kick beyond the post to leave the game goalless.

West Ham swarmed forward after the restart, but their challenge suffered a huge blow when James Collins was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

And they were punished further when Lloris smothered Stewart Downing’s late effort before Dier popped up in the 92nd minute to seal all three points for the visitors.

KEY MOMENTS

29’ – PENALTY & RED CARD! Nolan swivels inside the penalty area before crashing a shot into the arms of Naughton. Chris Foy points to the spot, but he hasn’t had enough fun yet – it’s a red card for the Spurs defender!

30’ – HOPELESS PENALTY! Noble jogs up to the penalty spot, waits for Lloris to dive, then coolly slots the ball in the other direction. So cool, in fact, that he puts it a good yard wide. Oops.

42’ – BLOWN OPPORTUNITY! Ricardo Vaz Te ghosts into the penalty area unmarked and thumps a header into the ground which soon finds the grateful hands of Lloris. Massive chance wasted.

63’ – SECOND YELLOW – HE’S WALKING! Collins needlessly, blatantly, crashes into Emmanuel Adebayor. It's 10 v 10!

64’ – PITCH INVADER! Spurs have a free-kick. But, before Christian Eriksen can start his run-up, a rogue intruder runs up to the ball and sends it towards the top corner… Go on… Adrian ruins the fun and catches the ball.

87’ – HUGE SAVE! Lloris races off his line to smother Downing, who looked certain to score. What a finish!

90+2’ – GOOAALL! West Ham 0-1 Spurs. Dier, for some peculiar reason, pops up as a striker. What can he muster? He evades the offside trap, rounds Adrian and slides home! What a moment for the debutant!

TALKING POINT

Can Big Sam appease the West Ham faithful? Boos rang out at Upton Park when Chris Foy called time on the contest, but the frustration was evident far before that with West Ham struggling to break down a Spurs side that had 10 men for over 60 minutes. Can Allardyce hold onto his job beyond Christmas?

MAN OF THE MATCH

Eric Dier (Tottenham): Looked assured at the back and capped an impressive debut performance with a fine match-winning effort.
