Premier League - Ten-minute substitution undermines Wigan

Wigan suffered a morale-sapping 3-0 defeat at Newcastle after playing over 75 minutes with 10 men.

As this week's Tactical Brain video explains, Roberto Martinez's side played pretty well - despite the one-sided scoreline - but for one blunder by the Wigan manager.

Centre-back Maynor Figueroa was sent off in the 12th minute after giving away a penalty - which Demba Ba converted for Newcastle.

Wigan were in danger of getting overrun, so Martinez summoned James McArthur to replace Jordi Gomez.

However, the Wigan coaches spent so long briefing McArthur - with the use of a nifty iPad - that before they could get him on, Newcastle scored a second goal.

McArthur eventually came on fully 10 minutes after Figueroa's red card, and helped strengthen the Wigan midfield, but by that stage the match was all but lost.
