Premier League - Rodgers: Reina finished at Liverpool after 'great big letter'

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has said Pepe Reina has 'already written his goodbye letter' to the club.

Reina, who is spending the season on loan at Napoli, still has two years left on a lucrative contract at Anfield and released an open letter to Reds' fans on his website when he joined Napoli, expressing his regret that the Reds had loaned him out to Italy without telling him first.

Liverpool spent £9 million to bring Simon Mignolet from Sunderland last summer to replace him, and despite some shaky form from the Belgian, Rodgers has no intention of returning to Reina.

"He’s already written his (goodbye) letter hasn’t he?" said the Northern Irishman.

"I was surprised at the letter when you are a loan player so I would suspect that he should come back.

"But Pepe made it very clear when he went to Napoli he was looking to move, as he penned a great big letter saying he was going to work with the best manager that he’d worked with and thanked for his time for Liverpool. So for me it probably sounded like he’d made his decision there.’

One player who does have a future at Anfield though is Daniel Agger, with Rodgers refuting rumours the Danish centre-back could leave the club.

"Daniel is an excellent player. There was a wee bit of spotlight on him last weekend but I repeat, this is a collective effort. I will judge every player, whether he is the team captain, the centre-forward or a squad player, I will make the decision if I think it will help us get a result.

"I have showed that in my time here and it was no different last weekend."
