‘Davies to join Spurs over Liverpool’ - Tottenham have emerged as favourites to win the battle for Swansea left-back Ben Davies, according to the Daily Mail. The 21-year-old is wanted by Liverpool and was keen on a move to Anfield but has reservations about whether he will play regularly as they maintain an interest in Sevilla's Alberto Moreno and still have Jose Enrique on their books. Tottenham have offered £8 million for Davies and Swansea are will accept that as they look to strike other deals with the north London club. Swansea have agreed an £8m fee for Gylfi Sigurdsson but the Iceland international will require Tottenham to subsidise his wages before leaving.
Paper Round’s view: The 21-year-old defender has been a shining light for Swansea in the last two seasons and it is no surprise that he has attracted plenty of interest in this close season. It’s hardly a snub for Liverpool, but more that Davies is keen to play first-team football – something which it seems that only Spurs can offer him. This is surely something to be admired: a young, ambitious young player who is putting first-team football ahead of anything else in pursuit of becoming the best that he can be.

‘The sordid truth behind Wilshere’s smoking’ – The outcry has been huge from the Daily Mail regarding the Jack Wilshere smoking controversy, and now the paper reports that the ‘sordid truth’ behind the Las Vegas pool party was that the England midfielder’s nearest and dearest were encouraging him. His brother Tom was reportedly the one holding a cigarette (and later a cigar) to the star’s mouth while his dad was also apparently there. Oh, and a former Arsenal masseur was also pouring champagne down his throat, to make matters worse, according to the outraged paper.
Paper Round’s view: Okay, so this sounds like an overreaction from the paper and a bit unfair considering the circumstances. For a start, Wilshere is not exactly alone when it comes to elite athletes who enjoy an occasional puff out of season when they spend most of their lives striving for physical perfection. More worrying in Wilshere’s case, however, is the fact that this is not the first time it has happened. It might not have mattered quite so much had Wilshere been reflecting on a marvellous season at Arsenal and a brilliant World Cup – he was there to be targeted and he’s done himself no favours at all.

‘Real Madrid want to sign one City star’ - Real Madrid are eyeing up a move for Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo as a potential replacement for Juventus-bound Alvaro Morata – that’s according to numerous papers. The Spanish giants are on the verge of selling their youth product, Morata, to the Italian champions and have been looking for players who could replace the 21-year-old at the Santiago Bernabeu outfit next term. And according to the various papers, Los Blancos believe Negredo would fit the bill because of his history in La Liga previously.
Paper Round’s view: The timing of this story is perhaps rather surprising. It comes just days after the City striker revealed that he did not want to leave England in the coming months after having being linked with Real’s city rivals, Atletico Madrid, recently. He said: “I don’t want to leave City, I’m very happy and settled here. I had a difficult end to the season and that’s why there’s been a lot of talking. But I’ve been very happy from the first day I arrived.” Still, if the right offer comes in and City feel as though they are right to cash in and look elsewhere for reinforcements, we would not expect Negredo to shun a move to Real Madrid.

‘Chelsea plotting £20m move for Atletico defender’ - Chelsea are in talks over a £20m bid for Atletico Madrid defender Joao Miranda, that’s according to the Daily Star. The Blues asked about Miranda's availability during the final phase of negotiations for the transfer of Atletico full back Filipe Luis this week. And the two clubs will speak again next week about Brazilian Miranda, who played a key role in the Madrid side's La Liga triumph last season. Miranda reportedly told Atletico he wanted to leave this summer but his club turned down an approach from Barcelona last month, while an expected bid by Manchester United never materialised.
Paper Round’s view: Yes, another Atletico defender linked with a move to Chelsea. The 29-year-old is currently back in training with Atletico, but sources close to the player have been reported insisting he would be interested in joining Chelsea. Well, this is standard hankering with either a new contract or a move ideal for the player and his agent. He could become the third player from his club to make the switch to west London this summer, following Luis and £32m striker Diego Costa. Seemingly, if Chelsea want to make this transfer happen, it will.
