Peter Odemwingie gave Stoke City a 1-0 victory over Hull City at the Britannia Stadium.

The first half was a miserably dull affair where chances were at a premium. Both sides are not known for their expansive or exciting approach to the game, and so it proved.

Hull City’s best chances came through Leroy Rosenior header, put well over after Shane Long crossed from the right wing. Tom Huddlestone also had a long-range shot turned behind by Asmir Begovic.

Stoke went closest in the first half with a low, weakly hit shot from outside the box from Marko Arnautovic.

In the second half, Stoke started brightest and Peter Odemwingie brought a good save from Steve Harper with shot from distance. On 57 minutes, David Meyler’s shot looped off a defender’s knee, and Begovic did brilliantly to turn it away.

On 62 the deadlock was broken when Odemwingie ran towards goal and drilled a fierce shot past Harper, inside the near post. With 15 minutes remaining, Ireland had a shot tipped over the bar.

Stoke City then sat back, but Hull City offered nothing more in attack.

MATCHCAST - FULL MATCH STATS AND COMMENTARY

TALKING POINT

Both sides need to improve their approach to the game - After a season where they are almost certainly going to stay in the Premier League, the tedious displays from both sides suggest that they could do with buying midfielders with some sense of creativity.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Peter Odemwingie (Stoke City): His goal was an impressive solo effort, but apart from that he and every other player on the pitch offered almost nothing of worth. For that reason there is no alternative for man of the match.
