Juan Mata of Manchester United celebrates scoring their second goal during the Barclays Premier League match between Newcastle United and Manchester United

Manchester United built on their performance against Bayern Munich to beat Newcastle United 4-0.

The away side rested seven of the team that started in midweek. With so many changes it took some time for them to grow into the match. Newcastle had the best early chances.

On 24 minutes, Papiss Cisse almost opened the scoring when his header was tipped over by Anders Lindegaard.

Just before half time, Juan Mata scored for Manchester United, curling in an excellent free kick. Javier Hernandez almost made it two, hitting the post after a Shinji Kagawa assist.

On 50 minutes, Mata had his second when a deft touch from Hernandez’s cross presented him with open goal, and 15 minutes later, Hernandez converted Kagawa’s pull-back at the near post. Cisse had two good second half chances for Newcastle, but Adnan Januzaj sealed the game after finishing at the near post following a one-two with Mata.

KEY MOMENTS

24’ - CISSE CHANCE: Santon whips in a cross from the right wing and Lindegaard does well to tip over Cisse’s glancing header.

39’ - MATA GOAL: Fletcher is fouled by Gosling as he looked to burst into the box. Mata takes a short run up to curl a free kick from just outside the box, and sends the ball into the top corner.

44’ - HERNANDEZ CHANCE: Kagawa brings the ball forward, shifts the ball left to Hernandez, and the Mexican striker curls the ball past the keeper and against the post.

50’ - MATA GOAL: Hernandez runs onto Kagawa’s header, sprints down the right and pulls the ball back. It comes to Mata, who takes two touches to put Elliot on the floor and sends the ball low into the net.

65’ - HERNANDEZ GOAL: Januzaj slides a pass forward for Kagawa’s run into the box, and he pulls the ball to the near post. Hernandez slides in and sends the ball in to the back post.

71’ - CISSE CHANCE: Antonio Valencia misses a high ball, it drops to Cisse, and his shot to the top corner is athletically saved by Lindegaard.

84’ - LINDEGAARD SAVE: Lindegaard does well to beat away Cisse’s point blank volley.

90+3' - JANUZAJ GOAL: Januzaj plays a one-two with Mata inside the box and finishes at the near post to make it four.

MATCHCAST - FULL MATCH STATS AND COMMENTARY

TALKING POINT

What’s happened to Marouane Fellaini? He walloped Dan Gosling in the face with a loose arm and then did the same to Luuk de Jong challenging for a high ball. His passing was simple, but nervously done, and regularly gave away possession. He is no longer the menace he was when playing at his peak.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Juan Mata (Manchester United): Few players would have the ability to score a free kick so close to the box. To get the ball over the wall and then under the bar requires impressive technique, and in a fairly muted game that deserves recognition. His second required the kind of calm that has escaped most of his team-mates this year. Dos gols por favor.
