UNITED KINGDOM, London : Sunderland's Italian striker Fabio Borini celebrates after scoring his team's second goal from a penalty during the English Premier League football match between Chelsea and Sunderland (AFP)

A late penalty from on-loan Liverpool star Fabio Borini gave Sunderland a 2-1 victory at Chelsea, giving Liverpool a brilliant chance of their first Premier League title.

Chelsea scored first with Samuel Eto’o’s volley on 12 minutes, and six minutes later Sunderland equalised through Connor Wickham.

Controversy followed when Ramires was stopped from heading into an empty net when Sebastian Larsson barged into him. Ramires retaliated seconds later, going unpunished for an elbow into Sebastian Larsson’s face. Ramires will surely be banned retrospectively.

In the second half, Chelsea plainly missed Eden Hazard as they struggled to make a breakthrough. Eto’o sent a great opportunity just wide of the post, and Ba slipped when it was easier to score.

On 82 minutes, Borini - a former Chelsea trainee who is on-loan at Sunderland from Liverpool - converted a penalty after Jozy Altidore was brought down by Cesar Azpilicueta. A minute later Rui Faria was off for sustained invective aimed at Mike Dean.

Liverpool are now clear favourites for the Premier League; Sunderland are still bottom. Chelsea's match against Liverpool could well send Liverpool on their way to the title.

KEY EVENTS

12’ - ETO’O GOAL - Willian curls in a corner, Sunderland fail to get a head to the ball, and Mannone doesn’t claim it. Eto’o beats Cattermole to the ball and hooks his volley past Mannone.

18’ - WICKHAM GOAL - Marcos Alonso is totally unmarked outside the box as Chelsea defend a corner. He sends a dipping volley towards goal that Schwarzer fails to clear away, and Wickham lifts his rebound over the ‘keeper to equalise.

36’ - IVANOVIC HEADER - The defender heads a corner down into the ground. The ball bounces off Mannone and against the bar, dropping back into the ‘keeper’s arms.

44’ - RAMIRES MISS - Willian sends a shot against Mannone that loops towards Ramires, facing an empty net. He sends his header wide when Larsson barges straight into him. The referee gives nothing.

45’ - RAMIRES’S MOMENT OF MADNESS - Ramires jogs in front of Larsson, in plain view of the referee, and aims an elbow into Larsson’s face. Again, the referee fails to act, but Ramires will probably be punished later.

48’ - ETO’O MISS - A lightning quick counter-attack sees Willian lay the ball left for Eto’o, but he curls his shot just wide of the post.

65’- BA MISS - Willian cuts the ball back for Ba, but he slices his shot miles wide with plenty to aim at.

82’ - BORINI GOAL - Jozy Altidore is tripped by Azpilicueta after he slipped outside his box, and Borini sends his penalty just wide of Schwarzer. It’s not clear at all whether Altidore was fouled or simply trod on the defender as they both slipped.

83’ - FARIA SENT OFF - After thoroughly and explicitly losing his temper and putting forth a frank version of his opinions, Faria is pulled away by Mourinho and other members of the Chelsea staff, and sent off.

TALKING POINT

How low will Mourinho take Chelsea? Walking onto the pitch, screaming at the referee and now provoking officials to send off their staff as well as their players, Mourinho has turned his side’s title challenge into a farce.
