United started brightly, creating the first real chance of the match as Patrice Evra’s cross allowed Wayne Rooney to hook a volley behind, and then Robin van Persie had a diving header deflected over by Glenn Whelan.
United were forced to make two changes due to injury in the half, as Jonny Evans and then Phil Jones were injured, forcing Carrick into defence.
Van Persie equalised two minutes into the second half, curling a pass beyond the advancing Begovic. The lead was short-lived though, as Charlie Adam rifled a shot in the top corner after United failed to clear a cross.
On 57 minutes, Walters was lucky to stay on after a reckless challenge on Smalling only received a booking. Oussama Assaidi then went close, his volley tipped over by De Gea.
United failed to hit back, and only created a clear chance in the first minute of injury time, when Rooney’s free kick was palmed onto the post, and Tom Cleverley shot shamefully high over the bar as Stoke could not clear.
11’ - EVANS INJURY - Evans limps off, replaced by Rafael.
14’ - ROONEY VOLLEYS WIDE - Evra’s cross from the left is met by Rooney but his effort goes wide.
28’ - VAN PERSIE HEADER - As Stoke fail to properly clear a cross, and eventually the ball falls to Van Persie whose header deflects off Whelan and over.
38’ - ADAM GOAL - Adam aims a shot on goal from a free-kick. Carrick should block, but his half-hearted attempt merely deflects the ball into the goal, away from De Gea.
45’ - JONES INJURY - Danny Welbeck replaces Jones, forcing Carrick into defence.
47’ - VAN PERSIE EQUALISER - A Mata through ball sends Van Persie clear, and he curls a great shot past Begovic.
52’ - ADAM’S SECOND - After Marko Arnautovic mishits a knockdown, Adam meets the ball brilliantly, sending the ball into the top corner.
57’ - WALTERS YELLOW - Walters should be sent off for a dangerous challenge on Chris Smalling, but the referee, lenient throughout, serves to encourage more dangerous play.
77’ - DE GEA SAVE - Evra heads a cross away, but only as far as Assaidi, and his volley is tipped over by De Gea.
90+1’ - CLEVERLEY MISS - Rooney’s free kick is tipped onto the post, and it eventually falls to Cleverley whose appalling shot is way over.
United have not changed the course of a game in the final 10 minutes of any game all season.
Robin van Persie has scored 10 goals in nine Barclays Premier League matches against Stoke City.
This is United's first Premier League defeat to Stoke.
Robin van Persie has scored a goal in six of his last seven Premier League appearances (six goals in total).
Charlie Adam has scored in three successive home matches in all competitions for the first time since scoring in three in a row for Blackpool in January 2010.
Which midfielder wouldn’t improve Manchester United? Given the lack of quality in United’s midfield it is hard to imagine a single Premier League midfielder, or midfielder at most clubs in the top leagues of Europe, who wouldn’t provide a less embarrassing option for United in midfield. That Ever Banega was loaned to Newell's Old Boys rather than United is a failure that borders on criminal.
