Premier League - Norwich and Newcastle enjoy barmy goalless epic

Premier League, Carrow Road - Norwich City 0-0 Newcastle United

Norwich and Newcastle played out an eventful 0-0 draw but the visitors will wonder how they failed to come away from Carrow Road with three points.

Newcastle may have been missing their star player Yohan Cabaye, who is set to move to Paris Saint-Germain, but they dominated this contest throughout, getting forward regularly through Loic Remy, Moussa Sissoko, Sammy Ameobi and Hatem Ben Arfa.

Remy in particular was in the mood and hit the woodwork twice - once through a fine curling effort and later with a free-kick that thumped against the crossbar.

Norwich, by contrast, were poor and another unambitious home display ensures that the pressure remains firmly on manager Chris Hughton.

Though they did not deserve to get anything from the game, they might have snatched it as Tim Krul tipped Gary Hooper’s snap-shot onto the bar before saving brilliantly from a Robert Snodgrass header at the back post.

Tensions flared with 10 minutes to go when Remy and Bradley Johnson squared up to each other. There was an exchange of pushes before Johnson reacted theatrically to Remy leaning in with his head, and Chris Foy deemed the scuffle worthy of a pair of straight red cards.

With both teams down to 10 men, the game became stretched, but neither side could find a winner.

KEY MOMENTS

19’ - WOODWORK - Remy with a few stepovers and a cross which Ruddy palms onto Bradley Johnson and the ball bounces back onto the post. Nearly a comical own goal from Norwich.

23’ - POST AGAIN - Newcastle hit the post again! Remy cuts inside on the edge of the box and tries to bend it in with his right foot. It would have been a lovely goal but it comes back off the outside of the post.

60' - WOODWORK FOR A THIRD TIME - Remy's free-kick thumps against the crossbar. Another let-off for Norwich.

75’ - AND AGAIN - This time it's Norwich who hit the bar! It's Gary Hooper's snap shot which is touched onto the bar by Krul

80' - STRAIGHT REDS - Both Remy and Johnson have been dismissed! They exchange pushes and then Johnson reacts theatrically to Remy going in with his head. Chris Foy takes his time but surely yellows would have sufficed there?

90’ CHANCE - Big opportunity for Norwich to steal three points! It's a fine stop from Krul to deny a Snodgrass header at the back post. How did that not go in?!

TALKING POINT

Did Newcastle miss Yohan Cabaye? On the face of it, no. They created plenty of chances with Remy, Sissoko, Ben Arfa and Ameobi all looking lively going forward. They did everything but score tonight but their creative play should provide hope as the Tynesiders come to terms with such a big loss.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Loic Remy (Newcastle): He may have been sent off 10 minutes from time, but the award must still go to Remy who was Newcastle’s most potent threat. He hit the woodwork twice and looked menacing whenever he got on the ball. He was Newcastle’s biggest chance of a breakthrough but let himself down with a moment of naivety.
