Premier League - Managers: Wenger slams poor defending

Arsene Wenger was hurt by Arsenal mistakes in the 6-3 defeat at Manchester City as we round up the days's managerial quotes.

Manchester City 6-3 Arsenal

Manuel Pellegrini

"Today I don't think it was the best performance because Arsenal scored three goals and that is too much for the amount of chances they had. But it was a very complete game in attacking. It is not easy to score six goals against Arsenal, the best defence in the Premier League. We had at least four or five more clear chances to score goals. In that sense I am very happy but we must continue improving. We are not thinking at the moment title hopes. We have a lot more to fight with six or seven important teams. I think we must continue improving. (Sergio) Aguero has a problem in his calf. We will see tomorrow how many weeks he will be out."

Arsene Wenger

"It was a difficult game. We had the best defence in the league and we conceded many goals today. Honestly, we could have scored at least six as well, it was a very open game. I think we made too many mistakes. Our strength until now was our defensive discipline but that went as the game went on. We were in a position where we could see the legs were tired a little bit and we had to run after the score. What hurts me more was that we had the opportunity to put Man City at nine points and now they are three points (behind). That is very different. That is a team that was not unbeatable today.

On Jack Wilshere apparently giving two fingers to the home support that could him see banned by the Football Association. "I didn't see that. I don't know if he did it. If he did it and is banned, we will have to accept it."

Cardiff 1-0 West Bromwich Albion

Malky Mackay

"It was an important win for us against a team who are around about us in the league. A clean sheet and a real good performance. I said to the boys at half-time to just have patience and grind them down, and I think we deserve it on the balance of play.

Steve Clarke

"It’s been a frustrating couple of weeks. I don’t think the performance was so bad that we deserved to lose the game but at the moment that’s the run we’re in. Over the course of the game we created enough chances to score. At the moment, when we defend well, like we did today, we still concede the goal which came from nowhere, really. Sometimes when you’re in a bad moment these things happen. We’re all hurting but the only solution is to work harder.”

Everton 4-1 Fulham

Roberto Martinez

"It was a really difficult game and the big moment was the penalty. After they scored we were more open minded and it is great to score in games like this. Fulham were good and pressed with plenty of energy but we found a way to win and we have three very important points. Rene has got them going and they all know what they are fighting for but today their goal changed our mindset. I am not sure how far we can go but I have the perfect blend of players and when we find that consistency I expect us to do well."

René Meulensteen

"If you see the game and the second half it was never a 4-1 defeat so it’s disappointing. We did really well in second half. The spirit and energy is back in the team, this is just a hard defeat to take. We need to brush it off, get to the training ground and prepare for the next game (Manchester City).”

Newcastle 1-1 Southampton

Alan Pardew

"It was a real Premier League game, good teams at it, but Southampton have got a great defensive record and we had two massive opportunities with Loic. I thought he (Remy) played well today, but those two you would expect him to score and at this level it would have made the difference. The rest of the game was very, very tight - they had periods, we had periods - two good teams."

Mauricio Pochettino

What happened at the end of the game is not a good example, it's not good for football. From our point of view, we are going to try our best not to let it happen again because it's not good for anyone and not good for the sport. I think it is avoidable but also in a high-intensity game such as that, any little spark can lead to something else and I think that's what happened. From our point of view, it's something that we regret and that we don't want ever to happen again."

West Ham United 0-0 Sunderland

Sam Allardyce

"Our in-possession work made life extremely difficult for us. At times, we never got the crowd excited and never got enough quality into their box and ended up with a 0-0 draw. We've built our base superbly well and the lads have to realise if you want to take points you need to score a goal. It's remarkable that with a defensive record like that we're in the bottom four area, not in mid-table."

Gus Poyet

“That was our best performance, even if we didn’t win. It was better than Villa, it was better than Manchester City because it was 94 minutes. We know what we need to do, we need to score a goal - we had one-on-ones, hit the crossbar, forced saves from the goalkeeper but that’s the way. I was saying before to the players that the first-half team on the pitch - that’s my team. There’s always a part that the opposition has to play but overall in terms of understanding, in terms of positioning, in terms of seeing what the opposition is doing and what we can do today was the best (so far).”
