Olympic Games - Sports Personality of the Year shortlist announced

The shortlist for the 2012 Sports Personality of the Year award has, unsurprisingly, been dominated by Olympic and Paralympic athletes.

Athletes Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis, cyclists Bradley Wiggins and Sir Chris Hoy, rower Katherine Grainger, boxer Nicola Adams and sailor Ben Ainslie represented Britain’s efforts at the Olympic Games.

Meanwhile, paralympians Sarah Storey, Ellie Simmonds and David Weir also made the list for the award ceremony on December 16.

World number one golfer Rory McIlroy and US Open and Olympic tennis champion Andy Murray completed the line-up.

Three double Olympic champions, cyclists Jason Kenny, Laura Trott and dressage rider Charlotte Dujardin, did not make the list.

Equally, Ryder Cup hero Ian Poulter, Olympic triathlon gold medallist Alistair Brownlee and numerous other star performers from the Olympic Games and beyond missed out on the incredibly competitive list.

Three former Sports Personality nominees were on an expert panel that decided the shortlist, with the winner set to be decided by a public vote on the evening.

A capacity crowd of 15,000 is expected at the Excel Centre in London, making this year's edition the largest in the event's 59-year history.
