Murray handed last 16 berth in Shanghai, wins for Djokovic, Federer

Andy Murray was handed a walkover into the third round of the Shanghai Masters after his opponent Florian Mayer withdrew from the tournament.

The world number three did not even have to take to court with the German forced to pull out ahead of the contest with a rib injury.

Murray, the third seed, will next take on Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov.

The US Open champion has now had two successive byes in the tournament, while his third-round opponent will have played two matches already.

World number one Roger Federer, who was the victim of a death threat in the build-up to the tournament, defeated Lu Yen-Hsun 6-3 7-5 to reach the third round.

The top seed, who has been surrounded by a large number of security men throughout the week, broke serve at 3-2 in the first set, then at 5-5 in the second to complete a straight-sets win over the 29-year-old Chinese Taipei player, who is ranked at number 62 in the world.

Federer will next take on Switzerland's 13th seed Stanislas Wawrinka.

Second seed Novak Djokovic hammered Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria 6-3 6-2 in only 54 minutes to also reach the third round.

Djokovic was in stunning form and lost just five of his service points as he continues to put pressure on world number one Federer for the top spot in the rankings.

"Very pleased with my serving in Beijing and obviously the first match today," said Djokovic.

"So that's something that I've been working on, obviously. Relying on the serve in today's tennis is a big advantage. So I try to get as many free points as possible. Today that was the case. It helped me a lot to defeat my opponent."

Djokovic will play Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the last 16.
