Kittel claims victory in Münsterland Giro

Marcel Kittel won the Münsterland Giro for the second consecutive year in Germany.

The Argos-Shimano sprinter took his 13th victory of the year in a bunch gallop, beating Kenny van Hummel to the line.

The Vaconsoleil-DCM rider was later relegated to 15th with Michael Van Staeyen (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator) promoted to second.

Czech Jan Barta (Team NetApp) and local rider Benjamin Sydlik (Nutrixxion Abus) animated the race with an early break and built up a lead of seven minutes after 67km.

Sydlik was caught and Barta was then joined by Martin Mortensen (Vacansoleil) and Marco Minnaard (Rabobank) but the bunch caught the trio with 24km remaining.

A sprint finish looked inevitable and it was the 24-year-old who claimed the victory, his third in a week after two successes in the Circuit Franco-Belge.
