Two outstanding goals from Ramires and Cesc Fabregas saw Chelsea record a hard-fought 2-1 pre-season win over Ferencvaros in Hungary.

Ex-West Brom and Fulham star Zoltan Gera had given the hosts the lead, as they opened their new stadium, before Ramires’ stunning half volley levelled things up, with Fabregas scoring an equally exceptional goal to give Jose Mourinho’s men the win.

With the Premier League opener against Burnley coming into sight, Didier Drogba was handed the start, although his evening lasted less than 20 minutes after sustaining an ankle injury.

Chelsea started brightly, with Andre Schuerrle a particular source of creativity and invention, but it was Ferencvaros who took the lead. Daniel Nagy’s cross found Gera unmarked six yards box, and finished into the empty net with a volley.

Jose Mourinho made a number of changes at the break, introducing Diego Costa and Fabregas, and his side found the equaliser after 51 minutes. A Ferencvaros clearance was controlled on the edge of the box by Ramires who then lashed it into the top corner with aplomb.

Gary Cahill hit the post with a header as Chelsea took control, and the turnaround was completed 10 minutes from the end, when Fabregas dribbled past almost all of the Ferencvaros defenders, before finishing past the opposition keeper with a shot on the stretch.

Costa should have scored a third, after being played through on the shoulder of the last defender by Fabregas, but the Spanish international managed to stick his stabbed effort just past the post.

KEY EVENTS

8’ SAVE – Good save by Dibusz in the Ferencvaros goal! Schurrrle lays it off to Drogba, who opens up his body from 12 yards out. His shot takes a deflection but the goalkeeper gets down well to make the save.

9’ ANOTHER SAVE – Another good save by Dibusz! This time it's Schuerrle on the end of a pass into the box, but his low shot is blocked by the opposition goalkeeper.

18’ GOAL – Against the run of play the home side have taken the lead! Gera makes the most of a dangerous cross into the box to volley home from close range.

20’ CLOSE – Chelsea come close to an immediate equaliser! I think it might have been Zouma who got the final touch on the effort on goal, but the header flashed across goal and just past the post.

37’ SCHUERRLE CHANCE – I can't believe that didn't go in! Everyone in the stadium thought that freekick from Schuerrle was in, but it was one of those that hit the back stanchion and rippled around the back of the net.

51’ EQUALISER – What an outstanding goal! Ramires controls a clearance on the edge of the box and lashes a half volley into the top corner with his left foot!

57’ OSCAR SHOULD HAVE SCORED Oscar should have scored! The Brazilian is slipped in on goal from a deep position, but he takes too long to get his shot away, allowing the opposition centre back to recover and make the tackle.

64’ WOODWORK – Chelsea hit the post! Fabregas' delivery from a freekick on the left of the pitch causes mayhem, with Cahill getting his head to the ball, but it comes bouncing back off the woodwork.

82’ WINNER – What a fantastic goal from Fabregas! The midfielder beats no less than four players on his way into the box, finishing past the keeper on the stretch.

90’ COSTA CHANCE - Great chance for Costa! Fabregas spots the striker on the shoulder of the last defender, but Costa puts his effort just past the post when he should have put his foot through his shot.

MAN OF THE MATCH – Andre Schuerrle

After such a successful World Cup, Schuerrle has picked up where he left off, providing Chelsea’s biggest attacking threat in the first half. The German drifted all the way across the frontline, giving Ferencvaros problems all over the pitch. He was unfortunate not to find the net.

TALKING POINT – Where does Cesc Fabregas fit into the Chelsea lineup?

The presumption is that the Spanish international will play alongside Nemanja Matic when the Premier League season kicks off next week, but Fabregas has played as something of a number 10 in pre-season. And what’s more, he has impressed there. But if Fabregas plays there against Burnley a week on Monday, who plays in the centre of midfield?
