James Ward has become the first British male to get through French Open qualifying since 1973.

Ward, 27, won a thrilling match against Blaz Rola of Slovenia 4-6 6-4 12-10 to join Andy Murray in the first round proper.

The last time a British man made it through qualifying was 41 years ago, when John Lloyd got into the first round.

Ward had beaten Ryan Harrison (USA) and Radu Albot (Moldova) to reach the final round of qualifying.
