IndyCar's current deal with the event expires in 2015. Long Beach hosted F1 from 1976-83 before first CART, then IndyCar took over.

The council met in a closed session on Tuesday to discuss whether to extend the current contract held by the Grand Prix Association of Long Beach, which runs the IndyCar event, or to open it to a potential F1 return led by Long Beach race founder Chris Pook.

AUTOSPORT understands that the meeting was inconclusive, with council members having been instructed to gather additional information to help guide the decision process.

There has been no indication as to when the matter will be returned to the council.

Next month's IndyCar race will be the 40th anniversary event for the southern Californian street circuit.
