Football - Wellens extends Rovers stay

Midfielder Richie Wellens has ended speculation about his future by signing an 18-month contract with Doncaster.

The 33-year-old's short-term deal at the Keepmoat Stadium expired after the New Year's Day defeat against QPR and, amid interest from other Sky Bet Championship clubs, Rovers released a statement on Monday insisting they were prepared to break their wage structure for Wellens.

Those terms appear satisfactory to Wellens, who will remain with Paul Dickov's side until the end of next season.

Chief executive Gavin Baldwin told Doncaster's official website: "The owners and manager have worked incredibly hard to ensure we manage to keep Richie at the club long term, this is great news for everyone involved and a clear signal of the owners intent for the future of Doncaster Rovers."
