FA Cup - Liverpool struggle past dogged Bournemouth

FA Cup, Goldsands Stadium – Bournemouth 0 Liverpool 2 (Moses 26, Sturridge 60)

Liverpool moved into the fifth round of the FA Cup with a hard-fought 2-0 win over Championship side Bournemouth at the Goldsands Stadium.

Despite naming a strong side, Liverpool struggled t o get going in the firsthalf and were perhaps fortunate to go in ahead at the break after Victor Moses’ low shot had squirmed under three Bournemouth players and into the net.

The hosts continued to press after the restart and had a major shout for a penalty waved away by referee Lee Probert with Martin Kelly clearly guilty of shirt pulling from a corner.

And it was Liverpool who grabbed the important second goal when Daniel Sturridge latched onto a pass from strike partner Luis Suarez and rolled the ball past Lee Camp into the bottom corner.

Both Sturridge and Suarez spurned late chances to add gloss to the scoreline but their profligacy did not matter as the match petered out as a spectacle and Liverpool secured their place in the hat for the fifth-round draw.

KEY MOMENTS

PRE-MATCH: The SAS start. Brendan Rodgers clearly smells an upset and names a very strong XI which includes lethal strike duo Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

26’ – GOAL: Bournemouth 0-1 Liverpool. Victor Moses picks up the ball on the inside-left channel, darts inside and fires a low shot through three bodies and into the net.

37’ – CHANCE: Suarez throws in a few trademark twists inside the area before knocking it back to Henderson who has the simple task of tucking home. Hmmm… The midfielder blazes over. That was the Henderson of last season.

58’ – BLATANT SHIRT PULL: Wow. Martin Kelly is a very lucky individual as he gets away with trying to swap shirts with an opponent inside the area from a corner - presumably he's been having lessons from Skrtel.

60’ – GOAL: Bournemouth 0-2 Liverpool. Sturridge, who has been relatively quiet up to this point, gets in behind the hosts' defence and slips the ball under Lee Camp. That should be enough for the visitors.

72’ – STURRIDGE CHANCE: Sturridge has a little glance, spots Camp off his line, and attempts a cheeky lob on the half-volley. Off the bar!

77’ – SUAREZ CHANCE: Camp must be allergic to his line. This time it's Suarez who spots the stopper of his line and attempts the lob. Just over.

TALKING POINT

Will Brendan Rodgers' team selection affect his side’s hopes in Tuesday’s Merseyside derby? It’s always great to see a manager taking the FA Cup seriously, especially when they have more important fixtures just around the corner. But anything but victory against Everton at Anfield, and you can bet the murmurings of discontent will start.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Victor Moses (Liverpool): Grabbed the opening goal and looked a constant threat on the left.
