Europa League - Bordeaux beat Newcastle to top group

Europa League, Group D - Stade Chaban-Delmas - Bordeaux 2 (Diabate 28, 73) Newcastle 0

Cheick Diabate scored twice as Bordeaux beat Newcastle 2-0 at the Stade Chaban-Delmas to top Europa League Group D.

Newcastle qualify in second place, and could now face one of the teams that dropped down from the Champions League in the knockout stages.

It was Bordeaux’s fourth home win of the Europa League campaign, but their first win against English opposition in 10 attempts in European competition.

Malian Diabate headed the opener just before the half-hour, then wrapped up the game with a cool finish through Newcastle goalkeeper Rob Elliot’s legs in the 73rd minute.

Elliot, making only his third appearance of the season, made a great stop from Henri Saivet in only the second minute of the game. The Ireland U19 goalkeeper was alert to block when the Newcastle defence failed to clear Gregory Sertic's deep cross.

Elliot then produced another smart save in the 17th minute when he was down quickly to keep out David Bellion's shot from the left angle, and was a relieved man when Diabate airkicked the rebound.

He was left helpless though when Bordeaux took the lead just before the half-hour mark, however.

Fahid Ben Khalfallah’s cross from the left was perfectly flighted, and Diabate was able to jump above Perch to head home his first ever goal in European competition.

Newcastle’s best chance came when Gael Bigirimana's hopeful cross evaded Marc Planus, but Shola Ameobi took a touch too many and Bordeaux goalkeeper Kevin Olimpa saved with his feet.

Sertic almost made it two 11 minutes into the second half when he got on the end of Mehdi Abeid's clearance from Bellion's cross from the right, and his shot just clips the outside of the post.

Diabate then wrapped up the tie with a cool finish after outpacing Mike Williamson to a long ball through the centre.

The impressive Fahid Ben Khalfallah almost added a third in injury-time, a goal the Tunisian’s all-round performance deserved, but he was unable to get his shot from Bellion’s cutback on target.
