Dakar - Cars: Peterhansel snatches overall lead despite team orders

Stephane Peterhansel moved to the top of the Dakar Rally standings with victory on the penultimate stage, less than 24 hours after his title hopes looked over after his X-Raid Mini team ordered him to halt his pursuit of team-mate Nani Roma.

The Frenchman, who declared that “the game is over” after Thursday’s run, is now favourite to win a 12th Dakar crown on Saturday’s final stage after overhauling Roma’s five minute, 32 second advantage to lead by 26 seconds.

Fellow Mini driver Nasser Al-Attiyah finished second, three minutes behind Peterhansel, with Roma coming home in third.

“At the end I stopped on the dunes to show him [Roma] that if he wanted to he could go past, but he didn't want to open the way on the dunes,” said Peterhansel. “So I opened on the dunes and finished very calmly.”

Roma added: “My day was not a special one. I had a puncture after 20 km and after I tried to stay calm.

“Nasser passed me, I followed him but then he made a mistake with the direction. So I followed my direction. Stephane passed me on one dune so I followed him to the end. The gap is small, but I'm still here and I'm happy.”
