Dakar - Bikes: Britain’s Sunderland claims maiden stage win in Dakar

Sam Sunderland took the second stage of the Dakar Rally from San Luis to San Rafael with a time of three hours, 42 minutes and 10 seconds.

Sunderland, who broke both his wrists before last year’s event, was 39 seconds ahead of Francisco 'Chaleco' Lopez in second.

Overall leader and teammate Joan Barreda Bort, who took the previous day’s stage, finished two minutes behind the 24-year-old Sunderland.

“I’m really happy,” said Sunderland.

“The bike was fantastic. It’s been a great day with a mixture of different terrains, speed and technical zones.

“When we got to the dunes, it wasn’t a really long stretch, but it went well. I’m really pleased for my first Dakar victory and to continue Honda’s winning streak.”
