The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider continued in his fine form by ousting Martin, who finished in a disappointing fifth.

The German world champion finished five seconds adrift of Polish star Kwiatkowski, coming in Garmin-Sharp’s Rohan Dennis, Giant-Shimano’s Marcel Kittel and Trek Factory Racing’s Giacomo Nizzolo.

"This is a surprise, actually," Kwiatkowski said. "I was in good shape after the Ardennes but I wasn't sure how I would feel today. I'm really happy with what I did.

“That was the first time I was sitting in the hot seat for so long. I think a few seconds advantage with such good competition here at Tour de Romandie is something special.

“I knew the course really well and think I did it perfectly.”

Defending Romandie champion Chris Froome, who started last, produced an impressive ride, carving his way through the field to finish in 13th place.
