Cycling - Greipel wins Oman opener

Andre Greipel won the opening stage of the Tour of Oman after edging a tightly-fought sprint to the line.

The Lotto Belisol rider edged clear of Leigh Howard (Orica GreenEdge) and Nicola Ruffoni (Bardiani-CSF) in the final few metres to claim the 150km stage from As Suwayq Castle to Naseem Garden.

It was Greipel's fourth win of the season - though he almost missed his chance to be involved in the sprint as his team ended up in the chasing pack after a split in the peloton 8km from the line.

Lotto Belisol's riders did well to lead a chase despite fierce desert crosswinds before delivering Greipel for his successful dash for the line.
