Cycling - Gene takes lead as Palini left beind by breakaway

Yohann Gene won the sixth stage of the Tropicale Amissa Bongo in Gabon to take the leader's yellow jersey.

The Europcar rider was part of a 20-man breakaway that saw overnight leader Andrea Palini's hopes of winning the overall race destroyed as a four-minute gap between the breakaway and the peloton was quickly established which grew to over six minutes by the end of the stage.

Gene then beat the rest of the breakaway in a sprint to the line to earn an eight-second lead over young Moroccan Soufiane Haddi and 14 seconds over Belgian Gaëtan Bille heading into Sunday's final stage.

"There is still a stage in Libreville and I'll try to keep my yellow jersey," said Gene.
