Alberto Contador konnte die Königsetappe für sich entscheiden.

Spaniard Contador sprinted free of a small group of riders who had reached the final straight on the summit finish, beating Nairo Quintana to the finish line.

But though the stage win put Contador second in the GC, Kwiatkowski remained in the blue jersey by finishing in seventh place 10 seconds later.

His lead over Contador is now just 16 seconds, and 23 seconds on third-placed Quintana.
