Colombian Betancur claimed an emphatic win, crossing the line in front of Trek Factory Racing’s Bob Jungels and Astana’s Jakob Fuglsang after helping to drive a three-man breakaway at the death.

It was a tight finish for fourth place as well, with Europcar’s Bryan Cocquard edging out Omega Pharma-QuickStep’s Tom Boonen in the sprint just two seconds back.

Team Sky’s Geraint Thomas, who took control of the yellow jersey following an impressive stage four, was in fine fettle and produced a fine ride – holding off a number of attacks during the final descent to retain the maillot jaune.
