The Colombian stole the maillot jaune from Welshman Geraint Thomas, who retained the jersey following an impressive stage six.

However, Betancur was superb during stage seven in Fayence, ascending well before overhauling world Champion Rui Costa as the road flattened out to take the win.

Omega Pharma-QuickStep rider Zdenek Stybar finished in third place, pipping Team Sky’s Thomas at the line to finish three seconds off the pace.

Colombian Betancur leads Thomas by eight seconds, with Lampre-Merida’s Costa in third – 18 seconds back.
