Cross-Country Skiing - Kowalczyk delights home crowd with dominant display

Justyna Kowalczyk blew away the field to claim her first World Cup victory in Poland, in the 10km Ladies Cross Country Skiing in Szklarska Poreba.

The 31-year-old Olympic champion dominated the race from the start and finished in a time of 34:34.2, 41.8 seconds clear of Russia’s Yulia Tchekaleva in second.

There was a tight battle for third place and Tchekaleva’s fellow Russian came out on top, finishing four seconds ahead of German pair Denise Herrmann and Claudia Nystad.

Earlier in the day Maxim Vylegzhanin and Evgeniy Belov completed a Russian one-two in the 15km Men’s race.

In a much more tightly-fought contest, 31-year-old Vylegzhanin came out on top of the chasing pack, which was ten-strong just a few km from the finishing line.

Belov (35:41.2) chased his compatriot home, finishing 2.2 seconds off the pace, while Kazakhstan’s Alexey Poltoranin completed the podium, just one tenth of a second behind Belov.
