British Open scores annulled at windy Hoylake

The second round scores of a quarter of the field at the Women's British Open were nullified after gale-force winds hit Hoylake.

The 36 players who took to the Royal Liverpool links on Friday morning were a cumulative 52 over par after just an hour as they tried to cope with 50mph winds.

A Ladies' Golf Union statement read: "The Rules Committee has declared the scores returned this morning null and void in accordance with Rule 33-2d.

"The competitors began their round in extremely adverse weather conditions and conditions subsequently worsened despite our belief that they would remain stable.

"It would have been unfair to those competitors not to declare play null and void and cancel all scores for the round in question."

Play will restart at 06:50 on Saturday.in the season's fourth and final Major.
