The win marked the Canadian’s first defence of the title with the bout stopped at the end of the seventh round and he will now face mandatory challenger Bellew in November.
Stevenson, who moved up from super middleweight in June, will be a formidable opponent for the Liverpudlian having initially won his title in a brutal 76 second demolition of Chad Dawson.
Stevenson had the measure of his opponent – whose last fight saw him lose his IBF belt to Bernard Hopkins - from the off and after seven bruising rounds his corner withdrew him with two cuts above his eye.
Bellew earned his shot when he beat Isaac Chilemba in an eliminator at the O2 in London in May.
