Alpine Skiing - Hoefl-Riesch extends World Cup lead with downhill win in Italy

German Maria Hoefl-Riesch stretched her lead atop the overall World Cup standings as she claimed downhill victory in Cortina d Ampezzo, Italy.

Hoefl-Riesch had already climbed the podium in Italy, finishing the Super G race second behind Austrian Elisabeth Goergl.

And just 24 hours later she saw the view from the top step as she came home in 1:17.84 minutes for downhill victory.

Completing the podium in Italy was Liechtenstein's Tina Weirather and Austrian Nicole Schmidhoffer who were second and third respectively.

Meanwhile, Great Britain's Chemmy Alcott continued her comeback from injury as she finished 41st in just her second World Cup race after breaking her leg.

Hoefl-Riesch's victory means she now sits atop the overall World Cup leaderboard on 961 points, with Weirather second on 803.

Austrian Anna Fenninger is third on 794 after she came home sixth in Cortina.
