Social media lit up with mockery after rapper 50 Cent threw an abysmal pitch to open the New York Mets' Major League Baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The recording artist and actor, real name Curtis James Jackson III, was invited to throw the first pitch from the mound at Citi Field in New York, in keeping with a long-standing a tradition of American baseball games.

But the man who rose to prominence with the 2003 album 'Get Rich or Die Tryin' failed remarkably in this seemingly straight-forward task: his left-armed throw veered horribly off target, landing way off camera and nowhere at all near the waiting catcher.

Members of the crowd understandably found his effort hilarious, and so too did the man himself. Or at least that's the way he played it out. Sporting a Mets shirt with the number 50 on it, Mr Cent hobbled off the field sporting a huge grin and chuckling with New York's starting pitcher Jon Niese, perhaps unaware of the internet mockery he would soon be subjected to.

The barrage of abuse prompted 'Fiddy' to take to Twitter himself as he tried to give an explanation for what had happened.

He has a point. But neither are Mariah Carey and Carly Rae Jepsen, who had previously been credited with throwing the worst opening pitches ever. And at least that pair's efforts went in the right direction; 50 Cent's was so truly awful, we can only assume he is, in fact, right-handed.
