Extraordinary footage has emerged of a brother risking his own life in terrifying circumstances to save the life of his brother, who had been caught up in an avalanche.

Davis LaMair was skiiing off piste in the notorius East Vail Chutes in Colorado with his brother, Edwin, and their friend Jack Edgar.

The group had split up, and Davis was enjoying the powdery conditions following fresh snowfall when he heard the avalanche - and looked across the mountain to see Edwin being swept away on the tidal wave of snow.

Davis immediately skied up to the top of an almost-sheer slope to try and look for his sibling, then spied what he realised was Edwin trapped in the snow down below.

Without thinking for a second of his own safety, Davis launched himself off the cliff and went to Edwin's aid - and was able to pull him out. He wasn't quite unscathed, but an ACL knee injury felt like a lucky escape.

"I was really worried I was going to be buried completely," Edwin told a local TV station after the incident.

"I'm extremely thankful that everything turned out the way it did and that I didn't sustain any worse injuries or die.

"We were lucky that they were able to find me and my head was above before it got dark, because if they had to search for me in the dark, it could've been a bad situation."

The experience has not put either brother off their activities, and Edwin says he'd have done the exact same if the roles had been reversed.

"I'll have his back any time we’re doing any backcountry activity or anything in the mountains, and I’ll always be looking out for him just like he did for me," Edwin said.

You can watch the video of the incredible rescue below.

(Warning: video contains one mild obscenity. Which we think is pretty much understandable given the circumstances.)
