You won’t like me when I’m angry – Janowicz ‘just goes nuts’

Let’s be honest, we’ve all had days when we feel like lying down and having a tantrum -banging our fists on the floor and kicking and screaming until we’ve got all the frustration out of our system.

Maybe you actually do vent your anger in this way in the privacy of your own home - Tramlines wouldn’t like to comment - but we all know this is not appropriate anywhere else beyond the age of about five. Right?

Apparently no-one told Polish 24th seed Jerzy Janowicz.

The quirky 22-year-old, who had already been spotted doing some running alterations to his shirt prior to his first-round match on Monday, became apoplectic with rage over a line call towards the end of the 79-minute first set of his second-round clash in Melbourne.

Taking on India’s Somdev Devvarman, Janowicz collapsed to his knees in anger with his forehead touching the court and yelling at the top of his lungs after the line judge failed to call out a ball that the Pole believed to have missed the line.

Janowicz had a brief discussion with umpire Marija Cicak at the change of ends during the tie-break (which he went on to lose 12-10) before remonstrating again after the end of the set. This time he went one step further though, hitting the umpire’s chair and throwing his water bottle clean across court.

Unsurprisingly, Janowicz was asked about the outburst during his post-match press conference. His response?

“Sometimes I just go nuts,” he said in an admirably matter-of-fact manner. “This was the moment when I went nuts.”

TWEET OF THE DAY:

There has been a lot of yellow around Melbourne Park already this week. Fluorescent yellow shirts, fluorescent yellow shorts, fluorescent yellow shoes. Clearly fluoro yellow is the colour of the tournament.

But credit should go to former Bosnian-American pro Amer Delic for this quip which both confused and amused Tramlines in equal measure, being unaware as TL was that a Sesame Street creature was featured on the endangered species list.

“I am sure it has been mentioned already, but what is up with all the yellow? I thought The Big Bird has already been saved. #AusOpen”

N.B. Tramlines can’t vouch for the clothing but no Big Birds were harmed in the making of this blog.

In fact TL did some research and discovered that Big Bird has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame right next to Debbie Reynolds, Errol Flynn and Eartha Kitt. Richly deserved, we think you’ll agree.
