Spending time on a desert island with Ana Ivanovic, and other superb ideas

Ana Ivanovic and the desert island she played on in Doha

Grigor Dimitrov and Eugenie Bouchard raised eyebrows at the weekend as they played an exhibition match on a floating court in Acapulco.

But their exploits were actually pretty mild compared to some of the outrageous tennis PR stunts over the years. We take a look at some of the best.

Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria took on Eugenie Bouchard of Canada in a friendly match on a floating court on the shores of Acapulco February 24, 2014, to mark the start of a local tournament.

Naturally enough, Dimitrov and Bouchard were then snapped via an underwater camera.

Nice view, though...

...but the line judges must have had a hell of a time trying to see if the balls were in or not, given that they must have been on the beach with a telescope each.

Ana Ivanovic and Elena Dementieva played on a desert island in the Bay of Doha ahead of the Sony Ericsson Championships in 2009. Who was the genius who first sat in a meeting and shouted out 'Let's get Ana on a desert island!'?

You can see the court on the island here - apparently, the only people on there with them were the ball boys. Ahhh, those lucky, lucky ball boys...

Tim Henman and Goran Ivanisevic played on the snow in front of the Natural History Museum in London for the 'Winter Whites Gala', which far from being the theme of BNP's Christmas party was actually a charity do ahead of a tournament at the Royal Albert Hall.

Rafael Nadal (on the right) and Swiss Roger Federer played the 'battle of the surfaces' in a special court of half clay and half grass back in 2007 in Palma de Mallorca. Nadal won 7-5 4-6 7-6.

Nobody seemed to realise that the 'battle of the surfaces' was actually just a huge handicap for Federer, receiving the ball off speedy grass and having to hit it into dead-slow clay. No wonder Nadal won!

In Qatar in 2010, organisers played on the whole '1001 nights' Arabian fantasy thing by getting Nadal and Federer to play on a magic carpet floating (thanks to a crane) in the middle of hte Souq Waqif.

What the local stall holders made of having their evening trade interrupted by two idiots pretending to play tennis for the cameras on a giant carpet is anyone's guess.

Nadal and Federer have done it all in their time. In 2006 they took part in the 'New York Street Slam', playing in a cube erected on Lexington Avenue in Manhattan.

Nadal and Federer at it again, literally "doing a Jesus" as they walk on water to play on the surface of the Gulf ahead of the Qatar Open in 2011.

If playing on the surface of the water isn't enough for you, try underwater. Mark Philippoussis and Tommy Haas actually played under water for an advert in 2003 - with the help of some special effects, obviously.

The granddaddy of all tennis PR stunts was this one on the helipad of the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, where Roger Federer and Andre Agassi played a match 692ft above the ground.

"You go and get it."

"No way - you go, it's definitely your turn."

At Monte Carlo in 2006, someone persuaded Nadal and Roger to inch their way through the traffic in a vintage 1930s Mercedes on their way to an exhibition match. And yes, that is Prince Albert in the back, giving directions...

The court in Monaco was worth waiting for: a stunning setting in the city's iconic Casino Square, made famous by countless F1 races.

Probably the weirdest one of the lot: an artificial grass court erected on artificial snow in the middle of Dubai. Maria Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport played a match at Ski Dubai in 2006, watched by two sheikhs and a Christmas tree. You couldn't make it up. And if you did, you'd be sectioned.
