Vonn’s veto and reaction from Sochi’s Social Network

The big news this week ahead of next month's Winter Olympics was the withdrawal of Olympic downhill champion Lindsey Vonn.

The 29-year-old American broke the news on her Facebook page on Tuesday.

There was immediate reaction on Twitter after the US lost their poster girl, with some wondering how the news would impact interest in Sochi in the States.

That new sweetheart may be 18-year-old figure skater Gracie Gold, who is in action at the US trials this week.

Like most teenagers, Gold took to Instagram this week to give the world a selfie.

GoldWorld slalom champion Mikaela Shiffrin could be the woman to fill Vonn's void and she revealed her secret nutrition weapon on Instagram before winning her second World Cup race of the season in Italy last weekend.

Canada would probably trade 10 gold medals for the big one, victory in men's ice hockey, and the announcement of their roster this week produced a great deal of anticipation, debate and national pride on Twitter.

The torch relay continues and still not a single Russian children's TV presenter has had a protester try to wrestle the implement from her. Instead they've created exciting artworks, such as this one in the city of Perm near the Ural mountains.

Of course the organising committee are trying to build anticipation ahead of the Games with shots of the new facilities on Instagram. Our final thought for this week - couldn't they have photoshopped out the blocks of flats?
