Sochi Summary Day 0

No competition but here is what happened at the opening ceremony and a look ahead to the first full day of action in Sochi.

HOT TOPIC

Gay rights groups have called for an all-out boycott of the Games due to Vladimir Putin's homosexuality laws. German President Joachim Gauck explicitly cited Russia's human rights record as why he would not attend the opening ceremony but more than 40 world leaders attended the event. Although Barack Obama, David Cameron and Francois Hollande were not in attendance.

GOOD DAY

t.A.T.u might see an upsurge in downloads of their UK number one hit from 12 years ago after the Russian pop star duo performed at the ceremony.

BAD DAY

One of the five Olympic rings failed to open at the start of the ceremony, meaning the symbol could not be illuminated with fireworks as planned. In what appeared to be a technical glitch, five giant snowflake-shaped structures suspended from the roof of the Fisht Stadium failed to unfurl into a circle, and the sequence had to be abandoned.
