For some now time we have been collating some of the finest beards in the world of sport. Some are contemporary, some from the past. Some are of a traditional nature, some have novelty appeal, and some are just plain manly. Grrr.

When a particularly strong growth is revealed, we name a new champion. Previous chart-toppers include footballer Adam Clayton and baseball star Brian Wilson (both of whom, oddly, share names with famous musicians).

But our new King of Beards is not an athlete - no, he is a fan of NFL team Cincinnati Bengals.

His long, painted, feline beard has become so legendary that a photo with the man has become as coveted as one with a player:

Huddersfield midfielder Adam Clayton: It should be worth acknowledging that our dethroned champion did not dye his (usually brown) beard blue and white for the good of his health. In April 2014, a local children's charity approached him - if fans raised £1000, Clayton would dye his beard in his team's colours. They did, and he did.

Clayton has since joined Middlesbrough, and his beard is back to its normal colour.

Atletico Madrid playmaker Arda Turan has become as well known for his beard in recent times as his football. But which is better? His ball control or his beard? You decide.

Baseball's Brian Wilson: The former San Francisco Giants pitcher has long been famous for his beard - it started after he vowed not to shave in order to keep the Giants' run going, and they ended up winning the World Series in 2010. His best ever beard was showcased on his return from injury in 2012 - that facial hair would shame most attendees at a ZZ Top fan convention. Wilson now plays for the LA Dodgers, but still has his beard.

John Watson

F1's John Watson: Having to wear a thick, heavy helmet for two hours in often sweltering conditions means racing drivers need true dedication to wear facial hair. That instantly gives the British Lotus, Brabham and McLaren driver extra kudos - almost as much as he earns for once having won from 22nd on the grid.

Football's George Best: The Northern Irishman was far too busy winning European Cups, nutmegging Johan Cruyff, wooing models and drinking Manchester dry to worry about things like shaving.

Brett Keisel

American football's Brett Keisel: He might have two Super Bowl winners' rings taking pride of place on his mantelpiece, but the Pittsburgh Steelers legend's remarkable beard is probably his finest achievement. His facial hair has its own Facebook and Twitter accounts, and he has bragged that he is the owner of "the greatest beard of all time".
