‘Sensitive’ Ozil needs support to shine, says Mourinho

The Rio Report

Jose Mourinho has backed his former player at Real Madrid, Mesut Ozil, to shine at the World Cup, if he is given the trust and support he needs.

Ozil's input was rather overshadowed by Thomas Mueller's hat-trick in Germany's opening 4-0 win over Portugal and the playmaker has come into the World Cup off the back of a mixed debut season with Arsenal.

However, Mourinho, speaking as Yahoo's Global Football Ambassador, says Ozil can make an impression if he is managed well by coach Joachim Loew.

"I think it is hard to criticise him, because Ozil is Ozil," said Mourinho. "If you are expecting Ozil to be super aggressive and to be running miles and miles from side to side and to show great enthusiasm and aggressivity, this is not Mesut.

"If you are waiting for somebody where every time he touches the ball, the ball smiles, every time he makes a pass the ball goes with the right direction, the right speed, the right intensity, this is Ozil.

"At the same time I learned with him, because we worked together for quite a long time, that he is a very sensitive boy. He needs confidence, he needs trust, he needs to feel that people are with him.

"When he is on the pitch, every time he touches the ball the ball goes beautiful and he finds always the right man in the right place; or sometimes you don't see him, sometimes he doesn't go to the screen many, many times but when he goes he is a special player."

Germany take on Ghana on Saturday night after beating Portugal in their opening game and appear to be performing as an impressive team unit, even if they don't have a genuine world superstar like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi.

Will this affect their chances as the tournament wears on? See Jose's views in the video below.

We also spoke to Jose about whether Germany's use of four centre-backs across their defence was conducive to World Cup success, and you can see his answer below.
