Stunning goal finally beats Fraser Forster after 1,256 minutes without conceding

In the end, he did not quite make the British record set by former Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar of 1,311 minutes without conceding.

But there is little doubt Forster did his chances of making Roy Hodgson's England squad for the World Cup finals in Brazil no harm at all with his form in recent times.

It was going to take something special to beat him. And it was.

He probably won't ever again have to deal with a shot as sweetly struck as the one by Jonny Hayes of Aberdeen at Pittodrie on Tuesday.

Not only did Forster's unbeaten record go, but so did Celtic's hopes of going through the entire Scottish Premiership season unbeaten as Dutch defender Virgil van Dijk was sent off in a 2-1 defeat to the Dons.

Forster attracted admiring glances from Hodgson after breaking former Aberdeen keeper Bobby Clark's 43-year old Scottish record of 1,155 minutes without conceding in Saturday's 2-0 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.

"I am really pleased for Fraser," said Hodgson. "It is a great achievement and he deserves it because he has been playing very well.

"Celtic are also doing really well and they are sweeping aside everyone they meet and that is good for Fraser.

"I think it will take some time before this very important record is beaten again.

"I certainly expect Fraser to hold it for several years to come. You can only congratulate him on what is a terrific achievement and a record, of course, that is still running."
