Aston Villa’s desperate attempt to sex-up Richardson transfer

Early Doors

Following a tremendously disappointing 2013/14 Premier League campaign in which Aston Villa narrowly avoided relegation to the second tier of English football for the first time in 26 years, there has been very little for the claret and blue faithful to cheer about for some time.

Even before last season had come to an end it was universally known that owner Randy Lerner was to put the club up for sale. Two months have since passed and no buyer is in place.

And to make matters worse, chief executive Paul Faulkner suddenly and dramatically quit the club last week.

So, what better way to appease the thousands of disgruntled Villa fans by not only first signing Kieran Richardson from relegated Fulham, but by then welcoming the left-sided utility man on Twitter in the most cringe worthy manner.

OK! So we understand that this is something all clubs must do. Welcoming a new signing on Twitter is now the done thing- this is the social media age, after all.

But, come on, Villa. Boasting about Richardson’s eight England caps (the last of which came eight years ago) and two goals is not going to get the fans excited for the upcoming season.

And neither will informing said fans of his two triumphs in club football – a Premier League and League Cup trophy, of which the last came seven years ago.

Richardson may prove to be a success at Villa, but those in charge over at B6 certainly went about his unveiling in the wrong way.
