Remember 10 years ago, when Jose Mourinho strutted into English football with his chest puffed out and made about a squillion football journalists simultaneously fall in love with him?

Yeah, there’s something about an ‘alpha male’ manager with a dash of charm mixed with authority that makes writers blush.

And yet, if you ask LVG himself, the media actually do him no favours at all.

Manchester United target Arturo Vidal ended up highlighting how terrible the media are. Or how terrible football club’s communications departments are. Or both, actually. Why not!

We’ll just say that everyone is wrong and doing their job terribly, and move on, shall we?
One player’s future was revealed as Van Gaal flippantly noted towards the end of the presser that Michael Carrick has picked up a serious ankle injury.

Finally, the press conference itself did not pick up the very best from LVG today. He followed it up with some exclusive stuff for the club’s subscription channel MUTV, during which two brilliant revelations emerged.

First, he admitted United have bad wind. No, it’s not Tottenham in 2006 and Lasange-gate all over again – he meant the weather conditions at Carrington!

And, upon arriving on the Old Trafford pitch, he had a first televised meeting with Wayne Rooney!

OK, so that’s not Rooney. That bloke’s far too cheerful.
